A high quality and super rare antique architectural carving of Pan, a Satyre, or a Horned God.
presumed to be 18th Century English , with later antique paint. He has goatish and slightly demonic features with an intense expression and large curved horns. Very similar to carvings that were sometimes found overlooking the front doors of wealthy households in the 16 – 1700s. A famous pair of similarly carved Satyres gaurd a doorway near the Bodlian Library of Oxford University. These types of figures were also occasionally found on the wooden Pews and furnishings of post – medieval European Churches.
A really unusual find!
